What BMI measures
BMI is body weight in kilograms divided by height in metres squared. It was designed to describe populations, and it is still used because it is quick and needs no equipment.
It says nothing about body composition. A muscular person can land above the reference range while carrying very little body fat, and someone inside the range can still have low muscle mass.
Waist measurement, strength, fitness, blood values and how you feel day to day tell you more about health than BMI does on its own.
Reading your BMI sensibly
A reference range, not a verdict
BMI places you on a scale. It does not diagnose anything and it does not describe how healthy you are.
Context matters
Age, muscle mass, build and ethnicity all affect how the number should be read.
Use it alongside other measures
Trends in weight, waist size, training progress and how you feel give a far more complete picture.
Frequently asked questions
- What is a normal BMI?
- The WHO reference range for adults is 18.5 to 24.9. It is a population guideline, not a personal health target.
- Is BMI accurate for athletes?
- Often not. Muscle is dense, so athletes frequently land above the range despite low body fat.
- Does BMI work for children?
- Not in this form. Children and teenagers are assessed against age and sex specific growth charts by a healthcare professional.
