Back squat: how to do it with good form

The barbell back squat is one of the key compound lifts for the legs. It builds strength in the thighs and glutes and trains the whole trunk to brace.

How to do it

  1. 1

Bar on your upper back, feet shoulder-width apart, toes slightly out.

  2. 2

Brace your core and push your hips back and down.

  3. 3

Squat until your thighs are at least parallel, knees tracking over your toes.

  4. 4

Drive up through the whole foot, keeping your chest up.

Common mistakes

  • Knees caving inwards.
  • Heels lifting off the floor.
  • Rounding the lower back at the bottom.
