Chest
Bench press: how to do it with good form
The bench press is the core chest exercise and also trains the front of the shoulders and the triceps. Progress is easy to track because the weight can rise in small steps.
How to do it
- 1
Lie with your eyes under the bar, feet planted, shoulder blades pulled together.
- 2
Grip slightly wider than shoulder-width and unrack with straight arms.
- 3
Lower the bar under control to your lower chest, elbows at about 45°.
- 4
Press back up until your arms are straight.
Common mistakes
- Bouncing the bar off your chest.
- Flaring the elbows straight out to the sides.
- Lifting your hips off the bench.
