Close-grip bench press: how to do it with good form
The close-grip bench press shifts more of the work to the triceps and builds a stronger bench press.
How to do it
- 1
Lie on the bench and grip the bar slightly narrower than shoulder-width.
- 2
Unrack the bar and hold it above your chest.
- 3
Lower the bar to your lower chest, elbows close to your body.
- 4
Press up until your arms are straight.
Common mistakes
- A grip so narrow it strains the wrists.
- Elbows flaring out to the sides.
- Bouncing the bar off the chest.
