Front squat: how to do it with good form

The front squat holds the bar on the front of the shoulders, works the quads harder than a back squat and demands an upright torso.

How to do it

  1. 1

Rest the bar on the front of your shoulders, elbows high, fingertips lightly under the bar.

  2. 2

Feet shoulder-width, toes slightly out. Brace your core.

  3. 3

Sit straight down with your chest up until your thighs are at least parallel.

  4. 4

Drive up through the whole foot, keeping the elbows high all the way.

Common mistakes

  • Elbows dropping so the bar rolls forward.
  • Torso tipping forward at the bottom.
  • Heels lifting off the floor.
