Shoulders
Overhead press: how to do it with good form
The standing overhead press builds strong shoulders and triceps and asks the whole body to brace, from the trunk down to the feet.
How to do it
- 1
Stand with the bar on your front shoulders, grip just outside shoulder-width.
- 2
Squeeze your glutes and brace your core.
- 3
Press the bar straight up, moving your head back slightly to clear it.
- 4
Finish with the bar over the middle of your head, arms locked out.
Common mistakes
- Leaning far back and arching the lower back.
- Pressing the bar forward instead of straight up.
