Single-leg calf raise: how to do it with good form

The single-leg calf raise trains each calf on its own and is one of the most important strength exercises for runners.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand on one leg with the ball of your foot on a step and hold something for balance.

  2. 2

Lower your heel as far as is comfortable.

  3. 3

Rise as high onto your toes as you can.

  4. 4

Lower slowly and do all reps before switching legs.

Common mistakes

  • Bouncing at the bottom.
  • Too short a range of motion.
  • Pulling yourself up with your arms.
