Deadlift: how to do it with good form

The deadlift trains the hamstrings, glutes and back in a single lift. With good technique it is one of the most effective strength exercises there is.

How to do it

  1. 1

Feet hip-width apart, bar over the middle of your feet.

  2. 2

Hinge down and grip the bar just outside your legs.

  3. 3

Flatten your back, brace, and take the slack out of the bar.

  4. 4

Push the floor away and stand up tall, keeping the bar close to your legs.

  5. 5

Lower it the same way, hips back first.

Common mistakes

  • Rounding the back.
  • Letting the bar drift away from your body.
  • Jerking the bar off the floor.
