Sumo deadlift: how to do it with good form

The sumo deadlift, with a wide stance, shortens the bar path and loads the glutes and inner thighs more than a conventional deadlift.

How to do it

  1. 1

Stand wide with toes out and the bar over the middle of your feet.

  2. 2

Grip the bar inside your knees with straight arms.

  3. 3

Drop your hips, flatten your back and push your knees out.

  4. 4

Push the floor away and stand up with the bar close, locking out the hips at the top.

Common mistakes

  • Knees caving in.
  • Hips shooting up before the bar moves.
  • Rounding the back at the start.
